Human genetic counselling

To clarify whether an unwanted infertility has genetic causes—especially before an IVF/ICSI therapy—we recommend human genetic counselling.

It is designed to help you understand medical-genetic facts and assess their significance for your personal life planning. Additionally, this counseling service supports you in recognizing possible options and making an autonomous decision that is appropriate for your life situation.

Human genetic counselling is aimed at all individuals who suffer from a hereditary disease or where there is suspicion of such a condition, as well as those seeking advice to clarify a potential family burden. It can also provide important insights in cases of recurrent miscarriages or suspicion of premature menopause.

The consultation usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. At the beginning, we will discuss your questions together, then review your personal medical history and construct a family tree covering at least three generations. Afterwards, our specialist in human genetics will inform you about genetically caused diseases and explain the significance of genetic factors in disease development. We will also clarify your individual genetic risks and transparently and understandably explain the benefits and significance of genetic testing to support your personal decision-making.

In the case of planned fertility treatments, we will specifically address possible genetic causes of infertility, explain which human genetic tests are appropriate, and arrange these if necessary. We will also discuss your test results in detail and relate them to your general and personal risks regarding fertility treatment.

Our goal is to accompany you in a personalized and trusting manner during human genetic counselling—with medical expertise and personal support.
